Feeding your Puppy

Up to 3 Months

In order to keep things as easy as possible your puppy has been reared on a complete puppy food 'Arden Grange Puppy Food'

As this is a complete food and no calcium or other supplements must be given with this. It should be well softened with hot water and allowed to cool. I suggest you feed as follows.

8 am                 Arden Grange with a little meat for taste

12 noon            Arden Grange with milk added

4 pm                as 8am

8 pm                as 12 noon

If you prefer, there is the more traditional method of feeding.

8am                  4 -6 oz of finely chopped or minced raw pet meat

served very moist with a little well softened puppy meal.

Tinned meat can also be used though it is not as good.

12 noon            Weetabix or Ready Brek mixed with warm milk rice pudding

can also be given. If you need to encourage the puppy to eat,

honey can be added.

4 pm                as 8 am

8 pm                as 12 noon

With this diet a calcium supplement in some form should be given until the dog is 12 months old.

Feed enough to be eaten straight away, and then remove the dish. Do not leave the food around if the puppy does not finish it. If the puppy thinks it can come back to it at any time. It will just pick at it and never clear the plate. If the puppy eats it all increase the amount.

A scrambled egg can be given up to three times a week. Do not give raw eggs.

3 to 6 Months

However you decide to feed your puppy, Vitamin C tablets should be from about 12 weeks of age until the puppy is 9 months old. You should give 500 mgm per day. These can be purchased very cheaply from Superdrug or Boots. You may find the puppy will love the orange flavoured chewy ones from Superdrug.

At some time during this period your puppy will loose interest in one of its meals; probably either the 12 noon or the 8 pm meal.

Space out the remaining meals and increase the quantities as necessary. By 6 months of age a puppy on the meat and biscuit diet will be eating around one pound of meat per day with an equal amount of biscuit.

6 to 12 Months

By 12 months your puppy will be down to two meals a day one in the morning and one in the evening. It is better to keep it on this. Boxers are better on two meals a day rather than one large meal, which may overload its stomach. The two meals can either be:

Morning                       Dog meal well soaked in hot water or milk

Evening                       Meat preferably raw

Morning                       Meat preferably raw

Evening                       Meat preferably raw

Morning                       8 ozs Meat with dog meal well soaked

Evening                       8 ozs Meat with dog meal well soaked

Morning                       a good complete for adult dogs

Evening                       a good complete for adult dogs

Vegetables (raw or cooked) can be finely chopped and added to the meals. Lightly cooked fish can be given as a change from meat occasionally.

Worming and Inoculations

Your puppy has been wormed at 4 weeks 6 weeks and 8 weeks you should worm it again at 3 months 4 months and 6 months, then twice yearly.

Most Veterinary Surgeons inoculate puppies at 10 weeks and 14 weeks. For safety reasons do not allow your puppy to walk where other dogs have been until about two weeks after the second inoculation. Booster inoculations are needed at yearly intervals.

When you take your puppy to the Vet, hold it in your arms, as an un-inoculated puppy is very vulnerable to infection and most of the other dogs may be there because they are ill.

General

Keep fresh water available at all times, in an un-tippable container.

Your puppy is like a baby and it will need to sleep a lot during the day to begin with. Although, again like a baby; it will prefer to play long after he or she in tired out.

Don’t give old shoes or slippers to play with, as if it gets into the habit of chewing shoes it may not be able to tell the difference between old shoes and your best ones - they all taste the same.
